What does it mean to know a material, such as clay?  A ceramic engineer might say that one would need to understand its hydration, rheological, and metamorphic phase diagrams.  A potter might counter that you need to work and play with clay for long enough to develop an intuitive sense for what it does and doesn't want to do, as well as a personal approach to expressing its qualities in aesthetic objects that you make.  In this talk, Professor Hideo Mabuchi – quantum physicist and ceramic/textile artist – will introduce and reflect upon his parallel endeavors in science and craft, comparing how these complementary modes of inquiry help us know the material world we live in.
